Meadowfield

Media Suite Makeover - your votes are needed!

Meadowfield School is located in Sittingbourne, Kent and serves pupils with Profound, Severe and Complex Needs (PSCN) including Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Severe Communication Difficulties and Physical Disabilities.

We are the only Special School in the Swale area and currently have 305 pupils ranging in age from 3 to 19. This number is increasing each year with a high demand for school places. As a result of this we are currently expanding our school, for example, we have recently added on new classrooms and there are plans to build a new Sixth Form and Sports Hall.

At Meadowfield School we continually seek to improve and recent new initiatives have included: Forest School, sensory circuits, therapeutic singing, gong therapy, increased work experience opportunities, yoga for special needs, a range of pupil well-being programmes and greatly improved feedback opportunities for pupils.

Our current ICT Suite is tired, with outdated equipment and not fully accessible to all our students. Our dream this year is to raise £10 000 to install a state of the art Media Suite so that our pupils have space for projects such as green screen, stop motion animation and podcasts.

The Media Suite will allow pupils to explore their creativity whilst also deepening understanding as they work with others. The flexible, open plan space will allow all of our students to access the room and will mean that there is a dedicated teaching area for those pupils who use eye gaze technology.

The Media Suite is crucial for all our students so that they can build on skills such as communication, problem solving, decision making, ICT skills and resilience. Developing these skills will give our vulnerable pupils the greatest life chances, especially with future employment opportunities. This is especially important as currently only 6.4% of adults with learning disabilities are in paid employment in Kent. (Source: Kent and Medway Health Observatory).

The Media Suite will also allow pupils the opportunity to gain extra qualifications; improving both skills and qualifications will support our students in entering the labour market which is crucial to achieving social inclusion.

Here is what some of our pupils have to say about our Meadowfield Media Suite Makeover:

“I would be so excited I would put 10,000 smiling emoji’s on the window”

“I would be so proud if it looked WOW”

“Re-building the computer room would be like putting 1,000,000 bows in my hair”

“It would mean we could use technology in cool and interesting ways and would help me when I leave school."

At Meadowfield School we want to celebrate all the wonderful things our students can succeed in; to focus on the ability not disability. We want to raise the profile of our school within the local community and celebrate all of our achievements. The Aviva Fund to makeover our Media Suite will help us to realise our dream.
