Caterpillars are an enthusiastic, curious class who love to explore their environment in practical ways. Learning is supported with role play, small world play, sensory activities and visual supports. In term 3, our themes will be ‘Fables and Traditional Stories’. We will use our theme to explore different concepts in Maths, Literacy, Science, PSHE and Art and Design.
In Literacy we will be reading ‘Little Red Riding Hood and ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We will answer basic questions about the story and join in with group role play activities. We will also continue to develop our writing skills through sensory write dance every week. We will continue to work on our fine motor skills by taking part in a variety of fine motor activities including, threading and dough disco. We will work on communication skills using symbols in every lesson and we will come together as a group for musical bumps to work on our attention, sharing and communication skills.
We continue to focus on phonics and reading, which will be through multisensory learning. The children will work on their own individual phonics packs, as well as whole class teaching. We will be promoting reading right across the curriculum, which will include symbols, pictures and words. We will share stories daily in our reading area.
In maths, we will explore number, money and shapes. We will share number songs together and join in with actions and rhymes. We will practice our 1-1 correspondence and the differences between quantities. We will explore money and practice basic exchanges. We will investigate 2D and 3D shapes and their properties.
In Science we will be learning about materials. We will collect materials and sort them and then we will test their properties to see if they are waterproof or strong. We will work scientifically and identify whether it is a fair test. PSHE this term will focus on friendships. We will share activities with our peers and try to foster positive interactions with our peers. We will make choices about who and what we want to play with. We will take part in a range of turn taking games and we will be practicing waiting.
In Art and Design we will focus textiles and collage. We will decorate different materials and use materials to make pictures and collages. We will also attempt some weaving.
We will provide a nurturing and social environment where we will encourage positive social interactions through adults modelling, feelings visuals and opportunities to talk together. We will share breakfast, snack and lunch time together socially and children will be encouraged to take part in all aspects to develop their independence and responsibility as well as their communication. Play is particularly important to us, as it builds the foundation skills of learning and social development. There will be opportunities to develop their imaginative skills, as a structured play session and also in free time, supported and modelled by an adult.
